Description:
Youth can rightly be regarded as standard bearers of social change. In a male oriented society this is particularly applicable to adolescent males. They serve as most helpful agents when it comes to moulding hardened attitudes and uprooting worn-out customs which are obstructing the road to progress. Helplessly caught in the meshes of vested interest, large proportions of young people do not enjoy the benefits of full participation and effective integration in the social and economic sectors. Youth constituting a major chunk of population has emerged as a vibrant force due to its growing number and assertiveness. On the basis of the population growth and the 1998 census figures youth below the age group of 24 comprise 62.56% of the total population with 26.87% being in the 15-29 age group. More than 76 percent of mothers have no education. One of the main reasons for the high rate of adolescent pregnancies is the young age of marriage. More than 17% of females
Objectives:
Harness the energies of youth towards constructive citizenship.
Develop a second line of leadership and responsible parenthood.
Promote gender equality and active participation of Youth at all levels.
Increase awareness of Young people to access sexual Reproductive health information and services.
Needs:
Recognizing that true indicator of success of any development programme is increasing the stake of the beneficiaries in both process and the products, this youth program stresses that the young people should be given more access to the process of decision making and implementation of these decisions. Such access should be in the form of identifiable structures, transparent procedures and wider representation of young people in the decision-making bodies. Therefore, we have taken measures to break the isolation that is faced by many young people that prevent them from actively participating in the decision-making. It is crucial that young people be involved in all aspects of programming. They should be the subjects and not the objects of programmes. They have been involved in planning, implementation and evaluation stages of a programme. The emphasizes is, therefore, more on working with the youth and not merely for the youth. Over the years the felt need for a holistic Youth development package also emerged, an other important realisation was the vaccum that continues to exist in the area of Youth programming. Within this background We have placed a Youth directed Program for Youth people by incorporating their needs , priorities and concerns.
