BRIEFBACKGROUND AND CONTEXT:
Wellington where the project is located is one of the densely populated communities due to government strategic planning over the years and has become centrally located in the East of Freetown. For various reasons related to its expected role in education as a cosmopolitan community, the largest population of it constitute of drop outs and disadvantaged youths. Also the rate of increase in and around the community every year roaming about and seeking for jobs without qualification and technical skills is phenomenal.
One of the biggest based needs for a Technical/Vocational Institute is the availability of mass dropouts who requires training in specific skill areas. This youths prefer to be trained within the community where they are already familiar. These and other factors explain why the need for Technical/Vocational Institute have an increase demand within the catchment area. The establishment of YEDEM-SL Training Centre arouse out of this situation particular with the alarming increase in the number of school dropouts, Refugees, displaced and ex-combatants most of whom roam about the streets of Freetown while others engage in selling such minor items with no future prospect.
A large school dropouts are victims of many unfortunate circumstances, the very awkward situation in which these youths find themselves need immediate special attention most certainly if given an opportunity by offering them special training for jobs and some skills to enable them become self-reliant. The expected result is that these youths will be of service to the nation and the problem of unemployment, poverty, migration and hooliganism will be greatly curbed.
