Worldyouth Meeting Notes
from Sunday, August 19
There were ten people at the Worldyouth Media meeting. The youth were ages 13 to 21
and came from Duke Ellington School of Arts in DC, McLean School in Potomac, Saint
Bartholomew in Bethesda, South Lakes in Reston, VA, and SMYAL and
1-800-SUICIDE. Two people from the youth empowerment organization One Common
Unity were also there (ages 24 and 25). There was also an adult mentor, 36.
We want the radio show to begin airing in September. We decided on the basic
format/flow of the show and discussed show topics. All the young people committed to a
production team and we brainstormed names we could call the show.
At the next meeting we'll vote on a name (so please come!), detail the format of our first
show and discuss the third week's show and outreach.
The basic flow of the show will be:
- news
- word on the streets (this would get many youth voices on air giving their opinion about a
given topic.
- interview with expert (youth or adult)
- panel discussion
- announcements
- panel discussion and calls
- wrap up/last comments
The first show will be on white power and racism:
how white power organizing is increasing in the area
who is targeted (victims and recruits)
the white power music industry
play soundbytes of white power music
list racist music bands and organizations
interview Doug Calvin, local hate crimes expert.
guest panelist will be young antifascist activist
purpose of white power and racism show is educating...
The second show will be on teen depression:
signs of depression, suicide
resources
self mutilation
interview with Arielle, a 21 year old woman working in suicide prevention
causes of depression (family, drug use/chemical imbalance, society)
maybe interview a kid in the recent TIME article on bipolar kids
have professional psychologist as guest panelist (making the exception here for an adult to
be a guest panelist/on air the whole show)
purpose of depression show is raising awareness, giving resources, educating, letting
young people know they are not alone.
We also decided it was important for each show to have a purpose, and for everyone to
be clear on what that purpose is.
Topics we want to cover in shows are:
white power and racism
teen depression (suicide and self mutilation)
live broadcast of a concert
stigma
juvenile justice system and youth imprisonment
what is globalization?
youth jazz bands
sexuality and being "different"
what inspire violence?
are youth voices heard?
The best names we came up with (we'll decide on August 25th which one we'll use):
Teen Voice Activated
Unheard Voices
Youth Outbreak
Strange Teens in Strange Times Youth 411
Youthink Radio
the young people committed to being in these production teams:
feature
news
tech
outreach
When we make the show schedules/clocks, we'll use a pie clock for the model...here's an
example of one:
http://www.commongroundradio.org/directors/one-hour.html
shows how to make a pie and linear program clock.
Here's a link to "Let a thousand voices speak" an awesome manual for youth radio
(including tips for starting your own) published by the National Federation of Community
Broadcasters. It documents 50 youth radio programs across the country...there's a radio
station in Chicago where young people are on the air and operate the station 24 hours a
day seven days a week!

Next Meeting: Sunday, Sept. 18, 1-3pm at the Worldyouth Media

Attending were seven youth (ages 15-21 from Wilson, South Lakes, Duke
Ellington, Cesar Chavez SHS's and the Hispanic Radio Network) and one
older adult. Several other youth expressed interest in attending
future meetings but couldn't make it this week.
The meeting consisted of introductions, accomplishments of Worldyouth
Media over the summer, and then brainstorming how a youth-run radio
show could be developed. We focused on an hour-long weekly live radio
show, but other ideas included producing pre-recorded segments for
national distribution. We had originally planned to also do public
relations and media spokes-person's training, but the radio program
discussion was so productive that we decided to focus on it for the
next several weeks, with the idea of being ready to go on-air in
September.
The following are some of the ideas that we developed for a weekly
youth-run radio program.
The program will be open to all teens in the DC area. It will not be
tied to any one school or academic program. Community service hours
should be awarded.
Role of adults:
There will be at least one adult per production area plus trainers as
part of the advisory board.
Adults will act as advisors and not moderators nor decision-makers in
discussions or meetings.
Production Schedule:
We will always be working two weeks ahead to allow time for research,
outreach and other preparations.
We will use circular pie-chart/clock to divide up time/tasks (for
example: 5mins for opening and credits, 10 minutes news, 3 minutes
song, 13 minutes panel, 3 minutes song, 3 minutes announcement, 1
minute word from the streets, 15 minutes call-ins, etc). This can be
put up next to a clock during the show.
We will create an archive of our resources, contacts and shows that
will be available on-line.
We are working to create an on-line national youth news-wire service.
On Air
Two hosts per show: one panel host and one technical host
Host list rotates with each host providing training to next hosts
One guest panelist per show
Two team panelists who volunteer to research issues and information.
Organization:
Five Producers, elected per semester/summer (staggered terms so there
is always overlap). Ideally, these positions will eventually become
paid part-time jobs. Producers will be in charge of facilitating
project teams of volunteers. Core group of people involved sharing
tasks – start with weekly meetings, move to twice weekly when on-air.
Everyone will rotate teams to experience all aspects of radio
production. Everyone will be encouraged to participate on on-going
media workshops and trainings with DC area youth groups.
The following represent the Production Teams and areas of
responsibilities:
NEWS
Headlines
Feature stories
Recording news
Coordinating news
Youth shorts
FEATURES
Word on the street
Reviews/opinions
Announcements
PUBLIC RELATIONS
Outreach
Networking with DC youth organizations, youth media projects and out-
of-town "best practices" youth media programs.
TECHNICAL
engineering
music
on-air calls
PANEL DISCUSSION
Research
Interviews
Resources
Making Waves, Rockefeller publication of core studies of
participatory communications projects around the world
Radio Rookies program from NYC
Wiretap.org
Needs:
2 – 4 mini-disc recorders with mics, headphones
computer with editing software
outreach materials (once the show is on-air) including stickers,
posters, fliers, t-shirts, etc.
