Background:
17 May marks the anniversary of the signature of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated since 1969.
Following the World Summit on the Information Society, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/60/252 which identifies 17 May as World Information Society Day.
The ITU Plenipotentiary Conference which met in Antalya (Turkey) in November 2006 therefore decided to henceforth celebrate 17 May as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
Objectives:
The overarching theme, “Tale of two Worlds” is suggested in the view to be reminded of the great divide that exists. In as much as there is plenty to marvel about the advent of technology, more than 3 billion people have yet to have the privilege of making a telephone call in their lives, according to the world bank. The sub-theme, “Keeping Pace with a Moving Target”, seeks to guide the discussions towards an end. The answer lies between embracing policies that work for a particular country and doing so in full view of the local marketplace.
