Description:
Young people in Kenya are invited to participate in creative writings and workshops on the theme, "language as violence, violence as language" and on different skills: digital photography, using diverse software, and online tools. Participants are invited to take pictures in their local community of relevance to the theme. The images will then be uploaded online to the Global Gallery that exhibits all the submissions from the participating cities.
Furthermore they will become part of a creative video and some of the magazine supported by UNESCO. All connected components in one unique interactive umbrella web-page. The entire project will be presented at the UNESCO Youth Forum 2005.
Background:
Exposure to violence is increasing worldwide. Young people are often the ones most affected by violence, while at the same time juvenile crime is also rising. In both cases, it is the character of violence as a primary mode of exchange that is being reinforced. Violence is not only an action or a practice. There are many dimensions to violence. It is a perception. It is an expression. A way to be seen or heard. A form of domination. A mode of discrimination. A lack, absence or decline of communication. All these dimensions are interdependent: violence is a process that prevents young people from developing their full potential as it impacts negatively on development. Violence is a social, economical, cultural and political issue, instilled in language. Language acts as a map that mediates reality through everyday communications. Its Within this context, and the experiences of the UNESCO Youth Forum held during the World Youth Festival in Barcelona 2004, UNESCO and TakingITGlobal are co-producing a creative publication: ‘Language as Violence, Violence as Language’.The goals of the publication are to spotlight the manifold forms of violence that young people encounter, perceive, and express in their daily social environment with the ultimate aim of actively exploring and developing ‘alternative languages to violence.’
Objectives:
-To enable young people to discuss the manifold forms of violence that young people encounter, perceive and express in their daily social environment.
- To actively involve the youths in exploring and developing ‘alternative languages to violence.’
-To shed some light on the multiple dimensions of the causes, contents, nature, and consequences of violence(s).
