Background:
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
There is only one Earth. Even so we are not looking after it as we should. We exploit faster than we replenish. We use rather than reuse. The greatest challenge facing mankind, today and in future, is how to look after the Earth's resources and create an ecologically sustainable society. So that the next generation will really be the next generation. The only option is to find, explore and utilise preventive environmental strategies.

HISTORY
Caretakers of the Environment International Tanzania started in 2005, based on three key ideas:

* Young people had to understand that, no matter which career they followed or what lifestyle they choose, they were caretakers of the environment.
* Young people - who would become the world's future leaders - should be provided with knowledge and skills for environmental leadership.
* In order to find solutions to global environmental problems, students and teachers had to develop international friendships.

Constitution and Statutes of CEITA were written by students and teachers and in 2005 it was established as a no-profit corporation.

Every year CEITA sponsors an National conference on enviromental education in secondary schools. From 2005, yearly conferences have to take place in a Selected Regional and covered a variety of environmental topics.

ENVIRONMENTAL CARREERS
Many young people today are already aware of the pressing environmental issues people are facing all over the world. But to them awareness is not enough, they are looking for pathways towards sustainable living. Some look at ways to (re)shape their own personal lives and lifestyles, others also look for jobs and professional careers in having a positive impact on the environment. CEITA beliefs that raising environmental awareness without providing young people with the competencies and empowerment to make a difference in their everyday life, will lead to apathy and withdrawal. Therefore there is a strong focus on environmental careers as a viable and rewarding way to provide for a living and a sustainable world.

Objectives:
DEAR PARTICIPANTS
Justification for the Forum

Local involvement is a key component of Agenda 21; local communities and environments are the most significant action fields. Education for sustainable development is committed to changing values attitudes and actions. But it is the way in which these changes take place that is fundamental, especially for young people.

If actions are changed through the full participation of young people this is likely to empower them, to produce an appreciation of the value of democratic processes and to strengthen concepts of citizenship. Schools are also important focal points for local communities and the catalytic impact of participatory schools on the sustainable actions and values of local communities cannot be over estimated.

If Agenda 21 is essentially about the creation of a sustainable, ecological, economic and social future; it is for the young people of the planet that this sustainable future is most important.
