The Network for Adolescents and Youth of Africa (NAYA) Kenya Chapter is a youth network for the youth and by the youth.
Mission
To advocate for the implementation of policies and legislation on adolescent and youth sexual reproductive health through dissemination of information, championing and promoting their rights at national and community level.
Vision
A society where the reproductive health and rights of adolescent and youths are recognized, respected and provided for.
Background:
The Network for Adolescents and Youth of Africa (NAYA) Kenya chapter is one of the continuing advocacy programmes implemented in Benin, Cameroon, Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and Sudan since the year 2002 with support from Planned Parenthood Federation of America-International. The network’s overall goal is to contribute towards the creation of an enabling policy environment that fosters adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (ASRH&R).
Objectives:
• Provide a forum for youth and youth serving organizations working in adolescent/youth reproductive health to voice their needs and concerns;
• Represent the voice of adolescents and youth in policy discussions and in matters geared towards their reproductive health and development;
• Collaborate with religious organizations /leaders in addressing the reproductive health needs and concerns of adolescent and youth;
• Engage opinion leaders and policy makers to address and to influence the implementation of favorable adolescent and youth policies;
• Network with other agencies and organizations to advocate for the implementation of adolescent reproductive health and rights and provision of quality services;
• Research and document on the progress towards the implementation of adolescent policies in line with the national Adolescent Reproductive Health and Development policy, Children’s Act, Sexual Offences Bill and Sexuality Education Curriculum.
• Research and document gaps in the sexual reproductive health and rights policies and legislation
Milestones:
• 2002/2003- participated in drafting of Adolescent Reproductive health and Development policy that proposes strategic actions on adolescent sexual health and rights, harmful practices, drug and substance abuse, socio economic factors and adolescent and youth with disability.
• 2005/2006-Advocated for the inclusion of a budget for the implementation of reproductive health along side other stakeholders. As a result of this, for the first time in the history of Kenya reproductive health was allocated funds by the government in the fiscal year 2005/2006 budget.
• 2005/2006-participated in the organizing committee for Africa Sexuality Conference on Sexuality, Sexual health and Rights and Development in Africa. A conference geared towards bringing sexuality discourse in Africa.
• Synergizing over 20 Non-Governmental Organisations, Community Based Organisations and Faith Based Organisations. This has generated debate on the need for an all inclusive adolescent sexual and reproductive health and development bringing these issues to the fore front in Kenya.
• Dissemination and training religious leaders, policy makers and network members in advocacy and policy dissemination on the government’s national Adolescent Reproductive health and Development policy, Children’s Act, Sexual Offences Bill and Sexuality Education Curriculum.
• As a result of existing cohort of religious leaders and faith based organizations and other stakeholders advocating for implementation of the mentioned policies, many religious leaders and policy makers are currently discussing sexuality issues in the church and at community level, a subject formerly regarded as a taboo
• March 2007-Held one day football/community extravaganza to lobby for support for the implementation of ARH&D policy
• 2007 participated in the organizing committee for World Young Women Christian Association youth event on Youth, Sex and HIV. A conference that brought together over 1500 delegates from allover the world
• Formed 20 peer clubs in Nairobi and Nyanza to heighten advocacy for the implementation ARH&D policy
• Held advocacy meetings with 8 electronic media houses, ministry of health officials, and provincial administration representatives to sensitize them on the NAYA advocacy agenda and the need for their support
