SMEI is a Maryland and DC-based volunteer organization that builds the simplicity community one discussion circle at a time. SMEI is part of a nation-wide effort to get people to slow down, live deliberately and have a lighter impact on Earth. Circles may use books, discussion guides, videos, or their own creativity to get the discussions going.

Live Smart™ by "Living Compassionately: How Choosing a Vegan Diet Helps Create a Kinder World” with Erika Meier, Executive Director of Compassion Over Killing

Ms. Meier spent three years as an Animal Control Officer for the Washington Humane Society (WHS) in Washington, DC rescuing sick, injured, and homeless animals as well as enforcing animal protection laws. Prior to working for WHS, she worked in PETA's (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) Research, Investigations, and Rescue Department. COK’s undercover investigations inside factory farms have been featured in various newspapers, including the New York Times and the Washington Post. http://www.cok.net/

Live Smart™ with Dr. Neil Barnard

Our Live Smart™ inaugural speaker will be Neal Barnard, M.D., founder and president of the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). A clinical researcher, author, and popular speaker, Dr. Barnard will talk about his new book, Breaking the Food Seduction, which features surprising evidence on addictive qualities of certain foods: meat, cheese, chocolate, and sugar. This gives an interesting perspective of how we think about food and a thorough introduction of a vegan diet. www.pcrm.org
