Despite that this demonstration took place during a very busy week of final exams at the University, we eventually obtained 1,000 signatories. As planned, we submitted copies of the petition to authorities in Turkey as well as to Turkish embassies in New York City and Washington, D.C. That following summer, the summer of 2004, after 10 years of living in a Turkish prison for proposing peace in the Kurdish language among Turks and Kurds, Leyla Zana was released from custody.
