Status: In Progress
Timeline: Ongoing

Description:
Youth and adult empowerment through education against exclusion.

Background:
The school started as a learning centre for adults in 1996, run by the Kenya Adult Learners’ Association who numbered to twenty. A participatory research on needs assessment by KALA observed that the children to these parents were not attending schooling because of the fees charged then. The research revealed that the vicious cycle of illiteracy would still be rampant if the children are not integrated into the learning process. The children were not only illiterate, but also lacked basic needs such as food clothing and shelter. This was an urgent need for basic fundamental social services and amenities to help in promotion of good health and hygiene aimed towards better living conditions. The rooms, which were used for adult learning and primary school, measured a mere 5m by 9m, which was further sub-divided into two rooms. They were neither furnished nor cemented thus posed a health hazard to the learners. The number of children grew to 250 from 150 and attended school five times a week while adults attended school twice a week. However, most of the children were sick or could not attend school due to hunger, which explained the turn –variation. The adult learners on the other hand acquired literacy skill in different fields of specialisation
KALA approached the responsible authority for allotment of a plot to construct an educational shelter where the school currently stands.

Objectives:
1.To make the rural youth aware of their social position as far as their lives are concerned
2. Be an advocate for the youth in development matters especially empowerment.
3. Develop the youth activities and promote their skills for survival

Milestones:
A number of achievements cannot go without mentioning
a. The surrounding community has realized the importance of education on their children. They appreciate the skills their children are acquiring as a step ahead in the promotion of social relations. Some of the students enrolled come from single parent family headed by women thus could not have access to education. The students have developed self-confidence and self- discipline extensively
b. Number of teenage pregnancies have also dropped as most of the teenagers are in the school so they are occupied through out.
c. The area did not have a school nearby students would walk for long distances in search of academic knowledge putting many at risk especially the young and girls, who could easily fall victim to human right abuse including rape.
