Since 2000, FEA school environmental education programs are linking the millennium development goals (MDGs) - for hope of mutually improving community development – through adopting a sustainable annual program titled" School Environmental Awards Program" or EAP.
EAP is an educational process and at the same time, it is a plan for awareness, building skills among students, teachers and parents in order to enable them execute real developmental "environment oriented" projects and enterprises, and help them adopt positive attitude towards their local environmental problems.
The program is designed in the form of a competition at the end of which, a committee of experienced jury with members representing community leaders (governmental, NGOs, private sector) rank the projects. A final annual celebration is held to recognize all participants.
Every year the program chooses one of the United Nations MDGs millennium development goals (that include: reducing poverty, combating hunger, tackling ill health, gender inequality, lack of education, lack of access to clean water, corruption, and environmental degradation) as a main issue, but in the mean time making links and connections with other goals so as to get best achievements.
The aim of EAP program 2006
- Raise awareness on the importance of creative learning, how to use it as a method of education reform. Creative learning is based on interesting tools of scientific thinking that helps kids make connections between the 5 kingdoms of nature, the elements of environment -including food- and sustainable development through introducing the twelve axioms of economy namely: purpose, growth, productivity, cash flow, price, quality, competitiveness, place, innovation, diversification, management, and thermodynamics.
- Encouraging scientific thinking and demonstrate how it can raise the life quality with minimum resources through stressing on recycling concept applying Tertrapack program "one step ahead" or "OSA". The program aims at adopting creative learning as a means of transforming the non biodegradable Terapacks into a resource that can be used as raw material for executing an environmental productive project inside schools as well as in their surrounding communities.
Target groups:
Direct targeted groups were 77 school friends of environment clubs: .
Opening ceremony and launching workshop:
3days workshop addressed to teachers, stakeholders to introduce the project, make awareness about problems, demonstrate tools and train participants on using them, put an action plan for each school to execute own project.
3 members of each school attended the workshop: activity deputyfrom social education department, environmental education teacher, and the responsible for the school productive unit.
The workshop was held 4, 5, 6 March at the Marine Club of Engineering Syndicate from 8.30 am to 4 pm. Under the title of "How to educate our kids"
The aim of Environmental Awards Project 2006 in addition to the already explained in an earlier paragraph, was to encourage scientific thinking and demonstrate how it can raise the life quality with minimum resources through stressing on recycling concept stressed upon through Tertrapack program one step ahead or OSA. Tertapack used packages will be collected and partly recycled in schools. The rest will be sent to Racta paper mill.198 participants through the three days of workshop as calculated from attendance sheets
Recommendations proposed by participants:
-Stressing on the importance of community participation to solve problems related to solid waste management.
- Signing Protocol with the responsible cadres in the Alex education directorate stressing on the importance of continuing the program with the same teams/ participants who attended the workshop and not transferring them into other schools.
-Assuring the availability of zeri tales in all participating schools.
-Assuring that no one can live strong in a week system.
Action plans proposed by participants during the third day.
1- TECHNICAL/ INDUSTRIAL/ SECONDARY SCHOOLS :
a - Revising zeri initiative concerning recycling projects( internet search).
b- primary environmental audit( evaluation tool): Data collection through tracking of distributors, consumers, amount of waste of terapack packages and available paper mills after allocating working groups of students, teachers, parents and NGO members.
d-Data analysis and discussion of results to find out the best solution that simulates the recycling system described in the story of strongest tree and case studies described in the book of solid waste management of AED.
e- Execution of the project:
*Discussing with the board of trustees the ability to substitute milk instead of non nutritive drinks with inside the school market
*Protocol with Racta Paper mill.
*School activities on paper recycling
*Visits to FEA environmental science center for the mini pulper show
f- Final audit: data collection through critical tracking of tetrapack packages as compared to the system described in strongest tree and case studies described in the book of solid waste management of AED, coming out with recommendations for available solutions, and executing the most possible one.
PRIMARY and PREPARATORY SCHOOLS
a- narrating the story of strongest tree
b- role playing by kids
c- making teams to visit near hotels and collect data to track amount of tetrapack packages distributed and consumed segregated and recycled / visit racta to collect data about amount of tetrapack packages recycled and source of collection and if all layers are being separated and re-used.( primary environmental audit)
d- Using school broadcasting to perform awareness concerning the benefit of milk in comparison to other non nutrient food staff available in the school market and discussing tools to substitute.
e- Making protocol for method of collecting packs from hotels/ school market to Racta
f- Discussing with board of trustees the best incentives to encourage participants achieve zero tetra pack waste explaining how the money gained could help ameliorate the school educational process.
g- Distribute final results to all students during the" environmental day" included in the activities of EAP project accompanied by exhibition of package re-use and recycling activities, expression by different forms of art performed by school students, parents, and community members around the school.
h- Summer activities stressing on excursions aimimg at experience exchange
PRE-SCHOOL AGE and OTHE TYPES OF NURSERIES
a- narrating the story of strongest tree
b- Role playing by kids
c- Teaching kids how to use tetrapack packages for planting and other forms of re-use
d- Programs for parents
- Education challenges and importance of applying creative learning programs
- Documentaries explaining importance of effective nutrition programs, recycling as an entry to solve urgent environmental programs ( Tetrapack as a case study) and decrease cost of row material needed to solve problems of unemployment and decrease costs for implementing productive projects.
- Experience exchange excursions and trips.
- Inviting the parents in the" environmental day" included in the activities of EAP project accompanied by exhibition of package re-use and recycling activities, expression by different forms of art performed by school students, parents, and community members around the school.
- Summer activities stressing on excursions aiming at experience exchange
-reports from participants were received at the end of scholar year
-summer activities:
Report of summer activities performed in the FEA team
At the environmental science center In the Environmental Garden
Aim: continuation of EAP activities of "One Step Ahead" partially sponsored by Tetra pack, through protocol with FEA ALEX
Target Population: friends of environment clubs in schools participating in EAP 2006 under theme" how to educate our kids"planning to train teachers as well as kids the ZERI method for creative science learning using Tetrapack package as a case study.
Time span: June21-6-2006 to September 2006 on a weekly basis from: 5, 30 to 8, 00 PM
Active attendance: East educational district school students & EAST social education department supervisors: sponsored by Social Education Department
Executive FEA volunteer team:
Consultant: Emtiaz Hassoona
Manager; Noura Nasralla
Coordinator: Roa Ghazy
Facilitator: M Hosni
photographer: Anissa
Logistic aid: Bahaa Kareem
STEPS OF ACTIVITES PERFORMED
1-Meeting the students & supervisors :
- introducing the members of the team to the students, discussing environmental concept, filling Assessment sheet to evaluate the environmental education level.
- a tour in the garden to identify features and kinds of the plants and flowers, also, to show them Models renewable energy exhibited in the garden, and the library.
- each student was asked to write a report about which is good & which is bad in the garden (audit). This was followed by reading the reports done to show how far their auditing is appreciated.
2-narrating strongest tree :the term“ strongest tree” was explained by dicussing scientific and environmental definitions and information, making a conjunction between the term of the ZERI fable “the strongest tree” and the society, ecosystems around us. Students were asked to write how to be like the strongest tree among their families and in their community, and the importance to participate in developing their society.
3-expressing through art through performing drawing contest on re-used paper
4-expressing trough literature trough expressing feelings regards the story on re- used paper and explaining Environmental components & solid waste Management by simple examples & conjunction with the story of “the strongest tree”
5- expressing through open discussion: how to be strong like the tree? importance of milk to gain strength? Importance of choosing the right milk quality? Importance of choosing a high quality milk pack?
- Educational group games were played to enhance students' skills on Negotiation, freedom of the opinion, how to listen and respect others' opinions and how to make connections.
Feedback: the students showed to us the models & symbols which they made by themselves from some material like : plastic bottles, cartoon packs which reflected their good understanding to recycling conception & How to reduce the waste generate from houses & importance of reuse.
6- Agricultural activities for Egyptian plants and open discussion about Egyptian plant assets, students' repeated visits to their plant places to irrigate and watch the steps of growth of plants
7- Appreciating the presence within systems: brain storming to compare the zero waste tree system, with the human feeding system taking tetra pack milk package as an example, designing the two systems by kids teams on large size paper to make the connections between components explained during previous settings. Children reused the empty Juice and milk packs after being given instructions how to segregate and clean them properly before handling. The Mother of one of the students got in to the team & she admired with the team activities & write a song to children talking about the environment & volunteer work.
The end result was examples on how to get milk from the caw which live farm, feeding plants coming from seeds, giving milk packed in a special way to be used safely by human, and the pack has to be “recycled” to assure safe environment.
Other examples from the environment like the wool, wood, paper, and the tree were also connected in systems.
Students showed creative Modules and symbols indicating understanding echo system, zero waste through solid waste Management.
7- minipulper workshop
-Stressing on the importance of cooperation between the departments of school environmental education, productive unit/ technical education, and social education inside each school and performing awareness sessions to local communities to identify the different roles played by different activity departments included in the education directorate and ways in which civil society can participate in.
- Attracting participants through awards included in the EAP, putting into consideration the importance of solving the environmental problems in poor schools displayed during the workshop.
-Decreasing the summer vacation period to only two months.
-Importance of activation / empowerment of the role of school boards of trustees
-Allocating budget needed to execute action plans proposed by participants during the third day.
- Field trip to apply system thinking:
Tracing life story of tetra pack package from production to recycling: through visiting a farm, dairy production area, package factory, supplier, retailer, consumer, recycling factory using data collection tools including observations, reporting and semi-structured interviews. This was performed partially in 28th august to be completed during the month of September; lack of budget is the main difficulty.
-Final festival will be held in november 2006
