Description:
In a society where distances are narrowing and horizons are broadening, it is essential to broad the field of analysis and to develop international interaction with the aim to catch up with all the on going changes in the cultural, economic and political structures . This is the idea behind Cafè Babel, that was born when a group of young people from different language and cultural background met in Strasbourg to specialize in their studies and decided that choosing the capital of Europe do not means only to study European issues further, but also – and mainly – to criticize, analyse and discuss the whole European structure. On these assumptions, Café Babel decided to create an interactive space where all contributions can converge. We though at the webmagazine formula as the most effective for reaching this objective. An international network is the only media able to spread our ideas and to get to know other people’s ideas. Café Babel activities begun in January 2001. The result, which is Café Babel, is accessible on the web-site www.cafebabel.com. At present Café Babel has five editorial offices in Europe (Italy, France, England, Spain and Czech Republic) with a transnational flair and gathering any European cultural and language aspect. There is also a network of translators that makes each article accessible in 4 languages. Starting from November 1st 2002, Cafe Babel will launch a paper version through a digital printing project , this should be the first step towards the creation of a monthly publication. An other off-line activity is the organisation of events reflecting every political and cultural shade present in Europe: political debates, international relationships, films projection and concerts. Both off-line activities will be launched in all the cities where the editorial offices are located at present. Café Babel aims to be a platform where to stage Europe and its diferent aspects: politics, people, ideas, cinema, fashion, cultures. Café Babel wishes to enter civil society and give its contribuiton in creating a great idea called Europe It aims to be the first transversal and truly European media able to create a transnational atmosphere that can be read, glanced through and lived everywhere, under the same sky.

Objectives:
To create a media prism reflecting every European political and cultural perspective and shade and to give space to these ideas.

Café Babel aims to be a platform where to stage Europe and its different aspects: politics, people, ideas, cinema, fashion, cultures. Café Babel wishes to enter civil society and give its contribuiton in creating a great idea called Europe. It aims to be the first transversal and truly European media.

Needs:
To become an on-line media acting as a transversal and transnational referent for European society – Creation of a European monthly publication – organisation of events where all cultural expressions can live together in one place: politics, international relations; economy, cinema, fashion and music. – Project for the translation into Arabic of the main European media and official EU documents to foster intercultural dialogue. Our first aim is 1) To enhance web-site’s quality and visibility through publicity campaign and fund raising. 2) To launch the Digital Printing 3) To partecipate to events through partnerships. We also aim to 1) Create a monthly publication 2) To organize events 3) To implement other projects; To become self-sufficient! In order to do this we have to find financial support to invest and to make implementation quicker (print costs, web site management, spaces hire, participation to/organisation of events, publicity through leaflets and posters)

In an utopic world I would say: quality and quantity of the articles made by young people from different cultural backgrounds. It’s really beautiful to see such an interaction among different shades in one single place. In the real world, results are measured through profit, contact numbers, number of people that will read the monthly publication. This is our challenge today: to enhance our visibility, to get as much people as possible to know our project and to involve them in the utopic world in order to turn it into reality.
