Description:
Big Blue Ball: Pictures, people, place is an international research project that investigates how young people from cultures throughout the world today are making meaning and forming common impressions.

Big Blue Ball: Pictures, people, place is an arts- practice based research project that creatively explores how meaning can be reconstructed through cross-cultural exposure and intercultural exchange. It actively engages dialogue with a diverse range of cultures through individuals responding to pictures.

Background:
By engaging the creative function as a way of exploring how meaning can be reconstructed through intercultural exchange, 150 participants from more than 80 nationalities around the world have responded to a selection of visual texts, producing paintings, digitised images, written descriptives, poetry, narratives and free word associations; the selected texts were hybridised, and other pictures and photos replaced them.

The project is then extended, by way of a continuing interchange of ideas, between myself as researcher and artist, and project members. My own creative reflections of negotiated interpretations have been hand-painted on small, magnetic-backed, wooden blocks, 100 x 100mm in size.

Over 200 blocks are made available as part of an interactive exhibition; piled on a table, spectators continue the communication process by moving the blocks around on the table and up the wall, constructing new ideas and new meanings.

This process is seen as a constructive expansion of cultural perspectives towards diversity awareness.

All project members to the project become co-contributors and are duly acknowledged in all publications and exhibitions.

Objectives:
I am looking for interested participants from around the world to become involved in the project in this way :- participants will be sent 6 images that have been drawn from various cultural environments, but that are not easily identifiable. Participants are asked to creatively express what the images mean to them.

Milestones:
The project has been going for about two years. We now have over 80 nationalities represented.
Responses have been amazing, and have taken the form of descriptives, poems, free word associations, paintings, drawings, electronically manipulated images, and photos.

I have recently presented a paper on the project at the International Humanities Conference in Tunisia which generated a lot of interest. The presentation included an electronic display of the visual responses collected so far.

The paper on the project will be published in the International Humanities Journal Vol 4 this year.

The project will be exhibited in Australia in early 2007 and will then travel to Paris to be exhibited in July 2007.

Budget:
The project is self-funded.

Needs:
The project requires participants from as many countries as possible to offer the full expression of cultural diversity. People interested in being involved in the project can email me on blue_ball_project@hotmail.com
