Assalam o Alaikum!
Today, I would like to draw ur attention to the ever-criticized aspect of Islam ie Hijab. Although ppl criticizing it seem to be narrow-minded than some intellectual, but this topic needs to be disscussed more elaborately. The point is how to coincide the Islamic thoughts regarding status of women in the society to the present social scenario. etc etc.Especially I would like the girl members to discuss it and give their opinions in the matter, because they would hav more realistic feeling about the matter rather than a man.
With respect to all!

Drop the Veil
April 29, 2006 @ 03:15 AM

Some female's opinion:

I came into the office believing this was going to be just another statement I am making, just another interview, just another rejection. An honors degree, a Cannes young Lions Award, A UK post-graduate diploma in advertising and a couple of years of international copywriting experience seem worth rejecting. Oh!!! And a 2x1m piece of cloth I throw on my head called “veil”.

In fact this is not the first time my veil raises some eyebrows and not the last time either. Naively so, my veil is not the problem. The problem lies in a society that judges individuals by their appearances. Had this scarf been round my neck it would’ve been absolutely no problem and I would’ve been good creative material. But since it is on my head then there must follow a dark bearded husband, some 12 kids to feed and maybe some explosives round my waist. As a fellow Muslim said: “ if the minute I covered my head with that veil I squeezed my brain out of it”.

I would like to share with you some of the less obvious reasons behind my veil conviction. The truth is, we live in a society that is slyly pushing women towards a suicidal edge. An edge that takes away women’s freedom by forcing them to be molded mannequins. As if by entering the new millennium women have decided to be digitally manipulated. The symptoms of plastic surgeries, silicon volumes, Anorexia and Bulimia are indications of this surrender. Have a walk in the streets; you’ll see all the same faces only with different names. By wanting to be the perfect figure, women are ending up being the same. You wouldn’t be quite unique if you had Elissa’s lips, would you? What exactly are we competing on? I proudly stand against this stream urging women to stop and think of what they are being valued for.

I had been working for one week at an advertising agency when I was called to the managing director’s office telling me shamelessly: “Hanadi, your veil is causing me problems. I feel it will affect my clients. Is it possible to remove it during office hours?”. Mind you I already had my veil on when I applied for that job. As if he was telling me listen darling we care less about your qualifications because it turned out that we depend heavily on women’s hips and thighs to get some more business running.

Is that a woman’s worth?

Let me tell you what a woman is worth in some TV advertising commercials. She is worth a cheap perfume, a nasty pad and a pair of jeans at its max. As for us veiled women we have taken over the detergents, softeners and washing powders category. Lets face it, we are paying the price for lazy creatives and bad products.

These are some of the meanings I object to and this is what my veil means to me in addition to more valuable reasons. I walk around saying I will not be a victim of popular culture. My body is not a public property. I value what God had gaven me and promise to keep my beauty to myself and my loved ones only. I will give men the freedom to scrutinize my mind, my intellect and talent away from all distractions. I feel pity towards those who can’t see beyond my veil. I know I am not missing much loosing a placement at their company. It is like telling a vegetarian he has just missed a great chicken meal.

My deal with God is paying back in abundance: a peaceful mind, a restful soul, and a soothing life. Precisely what money can’t buy. My faith is the source of my serenity. I care less about what people think because I am willfully committed to what I believe are the revealed commandments of God, the source of all peace.

These are my reasons for embracing the veil. Now what’s yours for rejecting it?

Hanadi
