The first Alexandria International Model United Nations (AIMUN) was organized by the Sustainable Development Association (SDA), 7-10 August 2005, in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), YES Country Network Egypt and the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Alexandria.
AIMUN, launched in January 2005, is the first UN simulation held in Alexandria. This year, it featured the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with the main theme of “Re-evaluation of the MENA performance towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region”, and the sub-themes of “Political Participation” and “Good Governance”.
The model is a student-to-student activity run by the youth members of SDA. The selected 35 youth participants attended a preparatory course to learn how to debate and negotiate, as well as how to set a plan for the MENA countries to achieve the MDGs.
The model’s goals were to introduce the Alexandrian students to the experience of the UN model and to raise their awareness of development issues as well as the UN Millennium Declaration and the MDGs. In addition, it aimed to hone their communication, negotiation and presentation skills. The team came up with a set of suggestions and recommendations that can be implemented among the youth and civil society.
It is planned to organize this program again next year.

Fifth Session 20-7-2005
Here we are in the AIMUN's fifth session which for me was very interesting and informative, thanks to Dr. Ahmed Sakr Ashour, Professor of Management in the Alexandrian University, who kindly accepted attending the session to share us his information about Governance.
The session started with Eng. Moustafa Hussein who talked about the project's website and how to sign up in this site. Then Mr. Fathy Abou Elsaad tackled the issue of
Governance and its concept till the arrival of Dr. Ahmed Sakr Ashour.
Dr. Ahmed then talked in details about Governance and Accountability
and how much they link to development. He said that governance has two basic dimensions which are inclusiveness and accountability and he explained both briefly. Also Dr. Ahmed tackled what good governance connotates. He said as well
that the region is experiencing growth stagnation since the 1980s in the
economic, social, political, technological and knowledge spheres. "The civil society needs solidarity to achieve good governance.” said Dr. Ahmed when asked how to achieve good governance. And when asked if good governance won't be
achieved but by violence, he simply replied, "Violence generates violence."
After Dr. Ahmed's departure, Mr. Fathy talked about the political
systems and explained the difference between the parliamentary and presidential systems. Then Ms. Edina, an AIMUN Secretariat, tackled the Democracy and political participation in the United States of America. She also made clear the difference between the civil rights and the civil liberties. There was a very hot debate then concerning the freedom of religion in America and to what extent is it respected.
Finally, the Newsletter team had a half an hour to discuss the newsletter with the delegates and their opinions concerning the newsletter. The delegates reacted so well to
this discussion and showed enthusiasm to participate in the issues to come.

The fourth session of the AIMUN was exceptionally informative and interesting primarily because new guests were invited to share their experience with the Aimuners and the delegates. First, the modest and mother-like Mrs. Nihal Kouesney, Information Assistant at the World Bank, talked about the nature and the origin of the bank, its goals and its different organizations. Then, she talked enthusiastically about the P.I.C (Public Information Centre) and the services it offers for the public. Her talk about development was full of hope and positiveness. She believes that working in the field of development is a
“mission and a passion” not just a job.
Then Ms. Edna, an Aimun’s secretariat, took the floor for her presentation on the seventh MDG : ensuring environmental sustainability” which led her to talk about the three targets of this goal and the benefits of achieving those targets in the proposed time. She was optimistic and always began with the “good news” and left the “harsh realities” to the end.
Then, Mr. Fathy allotted 15 minutes for the response and feedback of the delegates. However, their suggestions, recommendations and queries exceeded the 15 minutes and so Fathy promised to dedicate 30 minutes of the following lecture to hearing their feedback. After that, Amira Sobeih gave a 20-minute presentation on IS_SD (Information Society and SustainableDevelopment) which was followed by a ten-minute discussion. Finally, the delegates dispersed, each to his destination.
