The youth and media policy
June 9, 2005 @ 09:17 AM

There is an urgent need to make the youth part of media policy making boards globally and more or so in Africa where much of what is decided does not involve the voices of the youth.

Media in Africa
June 13, 2005 @ 09:17 AM

Africa is currently experiencing an overflow and sprouting of diverse media networks with different approaches in the struggle to keep information flowing. This has been such that many of the media houses bring "youth-oriented" programmes whose organizers are mainly corporate adults bent on using the youth agenda for commercial gain rather than giving the youth what they need to development and keep the continent moving.

Many today air pornographic and other adult material even in the day time and early evening hours when many young people are still awake. Similarly, salacious and sensual music videos receive airtime day in day out without a care for the children or even young adults. The use of vulgar language among media presenters is nolonger a secret in Africa with the youth bearing the full brunt of the said words and generally sexually-bent innuendo.

There is thus a need for greater inclusion of the youth in media policy bodies across Africa as this will go a long way in ensuring that the development aspirations of the youth are catered for in the media. The youth need a chance to develop the globe and their potrayal as immature and directionless, as its always done in the media only works to hamper their efforts. The youth need youth focused development-oriented programmes, which will not only build their capacities towards economic independence, but also enable them to better their lot through innovative ideas.
