Description:
Youth Media Advocates-Africa is a youth-led organization, which focuses on leadership development and media capacity-building concerned with the development of youth-led strategies for media accountability, openness and justice.
We at Youth Media Advocates Africa believe that youth are in dire need of media tools, resources, strategies and skills to become strong and effective media users, professionals and activists.
Objectives:
MISSION STATEMENT
Youth Media Advocates Africa advocates for the inclusion of the youth in the formulation of media policies not only in Africa but also in other parts of the world. The formulation of general media and editorial policies are very salient issues in a world that is currently pervaded by the rule of the media and its portrayal of events and people. The youth have often been painted as naïve and not knowledgeable enough to give their ideas in global development and policy forums. This however, is gradually changing. The principal media involvement of the youth should indeed be first at the structuring of policies to ensure that the world has a youth friendly media and not the current one where every kit and caboodle of “youth material” is being shoved down the throat of the youth even when its clear that its not in their best development interests but merely marketing gimmicks by companies bent on hijacking the youth agenda for the purposes of making profits. These among many other crucial issues need to be addressed by the youth themselves. The youth are the future leaders of this world and this can only become a reality when their voices are heard on vital issues touching on their welfare and development.
VISION
At Youth Media Advocates Africa, we envision a world where the youth are consulted and given a voice in the formulation and design of the media editorial policies across global media bodies. We see a world where rather than the daily airing and dragging of media paraphernalia to the hearing, reading and sight of the youth, their views are first heard on the suitability of the said paraphernalia and whether they are fair or not to the youth’s development agenda.
OBJECTIVES
* To advocate for the inclusion of the youth in the frameworks of media policy-making bodies and editorial formulating systems across Africa.
* To advocate for a fair, youth-development oriented programming in Africa’s media rather than the often substance-lacking representation of the youth as purely fun loving, mindless and directionless robots hardly able to take charge of their destiny for the betterment of the continent and the world.
* To promote a development focused culture among Africa’s youth in their use of the media as a way of tackling poverty, crime, HIV/AIDS, unemployment, drug abuse as well as engaging in and developing the Great Media Debate.
* To train the youth as positive youth media advocates, leaders, activists, and better global citizens.
* To increase the participation of the youth in the direction of the media for their development aspirations
* To develop youth media skills.
