Scaling-up Pakistan National Youth Service Program
Pakistan National Youth Service Program is marching from strength to strength. The recent development in the PNYS program is recruitment of another batch of 100 female service volunteers to carry out a wide range of community building activities in the field of education, skill development, reproductive health and environment. This new batch of PNYS service volunteers is created in many of those communities where girls and women are struggling for education and reproductive health services on account of gender discrimination and traditional attitudes. The idea is not only to re-brand the image of young girls within their families and communities but also to meet the high developmental needs of girls and women living with multiple discriminations. Pakistan National Youth Service volunteers have started the process of establishing 50 female adult literacy centers, 3 skill development and 3 non-formal schools for approximately 2000 girls and women. The purpose of establishing these educational centers will be manifold 1) to educate hard-to-reach or socially excluded young girls and women 2) to set up small community based groups of girls and women for collective action 3) to break traditional barriers in providing family planning and reproductive health service to girls and women in a friendly manner.
News from earthquake affected areas
Pakistan National Youth Service (PNYS) Volunteers continue to advance its role in many of the earthquake affected communities in Pakistan controlled Kashmir. PNYS volunteers are working with other agencies to help coordinate the setting up of facilities for displaced persons and rebuilding of key infrastructure. The striking feature of the efforts is to help local young people to help themselves. With the help of local service volunteers PNYS is providing educational, health and referral services to children, women and disabled people.
Handicapped Assistance
Without adequate independent mobility, handicap children in many earthquake communities have been denied access to goods, opportunities, services and social networks that are necessary for their growth and positive development. YES Network Pakistan recognizes the importance and urgency of the situation and appealed to several individuals and organizations to help her in arranging mobility aids for the disabled children. Many people and organizations in USA responded to the request made by the members of the YES Network Pakistan by donating a wide range of mobility aids for children. The mobility aids have reached to Islamabad with the kind support of UPS organization who has delivered this equipment free of cost. Out heartiest thanks to all those people who have contributed in arranging and delivering mobility aids for the affected children.
Saved girl children School
YES Network Pakistan with the help of its service volunteers has saved a girl children school from discontinuation in green town Lahore. The principal of the school recently contacted YES Network Pakistan and informed that the owner of the building where the school was situated threw them out and confiscated all their equipment without any notification. YES Network Pakistan immediately arranged suitable place and necessary equipment for the school to keep it going. Before this tragic event school was providing education services to over 450 girl children but on account of the sudden closed down the number of students reduced dramatically and reached to 245. The whole episode resulted in creating a financial deficit for the school authorities. Currently, YES Network Pakistan is developing a plan of action to help the school in meeting its expenses by introducing new components in the school such as library, computer lab and vocational center.
Data collection of pilot study on young people with disabilities
YES Network Pakistan in collaboration with Punjab University Social Work Department is conducting a pilot study on young people with disabilities. The objective of the study is to map out nature of existing services, challenges being faced and ways to improve and make existing services more inclusive. During the reporting period, data collection has been started by conducting interviews with young people with disabilities.
Signing of Contract
YES Network Pakistan has entered into a contract with National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) to assist her in establishing 50 female adult literacy centers in Lahore district. According to the contract YES Network Pakistan will establish 50 female adult literacy centers with the help of its 50 female service volunteers for 1500 women. NCHD will provide training and stipends to the service volunteers.
