YES_Mauritius partner launches Campaign on ‘Child Safety Online’ for parents in the rural regions, May 15, 2008.

The parents workshop, first in its series, was launched on 15th May 2008 in the south of Mauritius grouping some one hundred participants. The theme was ‘child safety online’.

The District Council chairman praised the organization for this laudable campaign during his launch speech as he was representing the ICT minister who was taken up at the last moment. The chairman also reiterated his financial support for the publication of a guide for parents that would be published by the ‘Internet Child Safety Foundation’.

During the launch, the deputy director of Internet Child Safety Foundation, gave an overview of the inappropriate contents of Internet. The participants, at the end of the workshop grouped in teams and came out with very resourceful recommendations.

The campaign will now move to the eastern part of the island in some months.

Monitoring Young Entrepreneurs, December 8-12, 2007

YES-Mauritius which embarked on a mentorship program for young entrepreneurs in Mauritius since the past years has just conducted its monitoring exercise for year 2007. The sixty young entrepreneurs and their respective mentors have been visited to evaluate the program.

The exercise was conducted during 8th to 12th December with the assistance of two evaluators from South Africa. These evaluators were accompanied by staff of YES-Mauritius .

The exercise successfully revealed the following:

• Young entrepreneurs are learning from the mentorship program
• The young people are getting used to the challenges of the businesses
• The beneficiaries are keen to continue with the program even after the end of it
• The business people who are acting as mentors are also very happy to help the young people.
• Some mentors have gone out of their way to help their young protégées.

A recognition ceremony for the Mentors will soon be organized by YES-Mauritius.

Briefing sessions for Enumerators icw Research on impact of Internet.

Internet Child Safety Foundation (Mauritius) a network member of YES-Mauritius is embarking on a National Research entitled “Impact of Internet on Children”. Enumerators for the exercise have been recruited and they are undergoing training. Once that step will be completed the enumerators will be divided into various groups with their project leaders to start the interviewing process. The report is due by June 2007.

Training programme for Young Entrepreneurs and Mentors.

YES-Mauritius has, this year as well, embarked on the mentorship programme for the third year. Experienced businessmen and protégées are involved in the mentorship programme. Mentors come from private sector in Mauritius and fall in the age group of 35 to 50 years old. Protégées or young entrepreneurs are young persons about to start a business or have recently started. Mentors and protégées are consequently matched and work together for the duration of the programme.

Project Goals are:-

- To increase the productivity of youth entrepreneurs by providing a mentorship programme
- Respond to aspiration of youth entrepreneurs
- Offer role models from private businesses
- Build and develop capacity of young entrepreneurs

Nov 2005: Learning Workshop for Mentors and protegees

YES-Mauritius will organise in mid-November a learning workshop for all the mentors and protegees.

The workshop will focus on progress reports submitted by mentors at the end of each month. The second phase of the programme will be assessed on the basis of its success and failures.
