YES Jordan achieves the first concrete result in youth employment.
YES/Jordan, hosted by Masar Centre, has launched, in partnership with El-Mobadara NGO in Egypt, a project called 'Gender Equality in Employment and Small Enterprises'. The two-year project is funded by the EU.
We have and will reach thousands of young women in Egypt and Jordan to offer them training, credit, consulting and many other services to help them start their own feasible projects in their own communities. The project has networks of partner organisations spread in many parts of the two countries. The project is one of seven launched last summer and the big campaign is called 'Role of Women in Economic Life' with many countirs in the Middle East and Africa involved. More details will be posted here soon.

YES/Jordan
Updates and Action Plan

I. Updates
January to June 2003
During this period the following activities/actions have been organized by YES/Jordan:
1- Three meetings of the YES/Jordan members during which old and new members met and discussed achievements and future plans.
2- Proposals on projects in the field of environment have been completed and submitted to possible donors. One of the successes so far is a scholarship to study a four-month course on environment in an international program sponsored by the US government and universities.
3- A big group of youth activists joined the network. They were about 30 youth activists in the same field and were brought in to YES/Jordan following meetings and studies on feasibility of merging the two networks.
4- YES/Jordan has provided consulting services to two projects for youth in Amman. The two will start action this summer. One of them is a group of youth opening a shop to import accessories used by young women, and the second is a specialized service company for manufacturers in Jordan.

II. Action Plan
Action Plan for July to December 2003
- Organize weekly and monthly meetings for the network members.
- Recruit members from different areas of the kingdom; villages and small towns in addition to desert areas inhabitants.
- Continue the consulting services to youth willing to start businesses in different areas of Jordan.
- Organize discussion panels for designing projects and submitting proposals to possible funders. Environment will continue to be one of the main focuses.
- A group of university students have shown interest in the initiative and would like to start cooperation. We will work with professors and other university officials to bring the culture of employment and entrepreneurship to universities.
- In August, we will organize a tour of different villages and cities in north and south Jordan to explain YES and YES/Jordan and promote the initiative. About ten of the activists in the network will implement the tour.

III.
Workshops:
YES/Jordan will start a series of workshops on different topics and skills related to youth employments and entrepreneurship. These will start in July through to December.

IV.
Fundraising
There are contacts with local, regional and international funding agencies to sponsor activities and projects for YES/Jordan. We have initiated serious contacts with a USAID project in Jordan and we will jointly design a project which will serve youth employment needs.
There is a team now of experienced professionals who will volunteer in writing proposals for Yes/Jordan

V.
Gaps
One of the difficulties that we faced during the past five months was the war in Iraq which for Jordan was a very difficult development.
The gaps that exist in YES/Jordan are mainly financial. There are a group of committed youth activists who are willing to devote time and energy but need to see results on the ground. It has not been easy, specially taking into account the war in Iraq circumstances, to generate funding for activities and projects. There are promising signals that the second half of this year will be better.
