April 23rd & 24th YES Nagaland State level consultation

The Youth Employment Summit (YES) Campaign Nagaland Chapter conducted state level consultation on the 23rd and 24th of April 2007 at Kohima. Which was Co-chaired by Hon’ Chief Minister, Neiphieu Rio and Chief Secretary, Lalhuma IAS. The workshop was organised to create a sustainable youth-led programme by the youth on youth employment in partnership with the government and private sectors. The consultation was based on the theme “Back to the Land” in conjunction with the theme of the year of farmers.

About one thousand students and youths participated at the inaugural function and 114 official invitees representing all the eleven districts, major stakeholders, Government officials, Non-Government Organizations, successful Naga entrepreneurs and businessmen participated at the technical session. The themes of the technical sessions were;
• Building an Entrepreneurial Culture,
• Natural Resources and Livelihood and
• Promoting Youth Employment through Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Experts both from private and the government in the field of entrepreneurship development, natural resource and livelihood, information and communication technology (ICT), rural development, micro-credit/ finance and agriculture were invited to make presentation for the panel discussion.

The two days consultation resulted into a series of discussion surrounding the theme. The aspirations and strategies suggested by the youth during the consultation are;
• Easy accessibility to information and streamlining documentation,
• Capacity and skill building for developing human resource,
• Human resource data base to map existing human potentials of the state,
• Research and policy development,
• Strengthening infrastructure,
• Government facilities as demonstration and learning centre for ICT,
• Introducing credit card facility for e-business to sell local goods in the global market through internet,
• Government advertisement to be attractive and competitive with private institution to attract consumers and communitizing ICT.
• Government-Youth-NGO partnership has been recommended to enhance youth participation in development. The issues presented at the state consultation will be further deliberated upon during the district level consultation in the next few months.

FEBRAUARY 2006
Yes India and Yes Tamil Nadu networked with CPCL(Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited) and launched a garment training program for the people of the Tsunami affected areas. CPCL funded the program. The higher officers of CPCL and the Deputy Collector of the Chennai Collectorate inaugarated the program. It was a tie up with Vision India Apparels for imparting the technical knowledge of apparel making to the students of the Tsunami affected region. Totally thirty students were trained and were placed by the end of it. The project helped create livelihood for the people affected by Tsunami.

APRIL-MAY 2006
The Yes Network tied up with GE who sponsored a Training Program for the people of the Tsunami affected region of New Kalpakkam in the east coast road. The program was a huge success and helped in the creation of employment to a large extent.
Seeing the success GE continued their sponsor the next year as well, but due to elections the project was not implemented in New Kalpakkam but the funds were re-directed to the Thiruvallur district where it has been implemented successfully creating many job opportunities for the prople of the Thiruvallur district.

AUGUST 2006
Yes India and Yes Tamil Nadu took up a project on organic farming. It is a public-private undertaking for agro-based initiatives. The proposal is in the processing stage after which it is to be funded by the government. The technical assistance is provided by the private institute ‘X’ and the people from various SHG’s are provided employment, it satisfies the need for creating employment as well as provides environment friendly solutions in the field of agriculture. World Corps and Yes India helped in mobolising the public-private partnership.

SEPTEMBER 2006
In September Yes India came up with initiatives to provide total sanitation in Thiruvallur district . Yes India and Yes Tamil Nadu tied up with the Thiruvallur collectorate to provide a clean and an hygienic environment for the people. The collectorate has approved the proposal and has funded the program, it is a huge success leading to better and improved sanitation facilities in the whole of the district. This program has helped reduce the spread of communicable disease in the area and helped in betterment of the sanitation facilties.

DECEMBER 2006
In December, Yes India and Yes Tamil Nadu conducted a cycle rally on mark of the World AIDS day. The students of Presidency college took part in it. It was a 80 km rally from Marina beach to Mamallapuram, where the Kanchipuram collectorate provided the students an accommodation. It helped create awarness on Safe sex, Sex education, Young adolescents at risk and other related issues.
The rally was a huge success and was made possible with the help of the Kanchipuram collectorate who helped and coordinated with Yes India at various stages in conducting the rally.

JANUARY 2006
Yes India tied up with Stella Maris students to uplift the weavers community in Arani, a village in outskirts of the Chennai city. A proposal was given to the Thrivallur collector for approval and was eventually approved. The project helped the weavers to come out the problem of working capital, by helping them market their own products without middlemen. It helped the weavers to identify their weakness and strengths. Various exhibitions were conducted, helping them sell their products. The project is a huge success benefiting a large number of weavers, it helped create awarness and helped them realize the finer aspects of marketing eventually making them self employed by imparting managerial as well as` technical skills.

YES India Network Project for Tsunami-affected Youth-
YES India Network in collaboration with other like-minded groups had initiated its first project to bring back hope into the lives of those affected youth from the Tsunami-hit areas by providing training in various skill-based vocations.

YES India Network in association with Jayaprakash Narayan Community College and GE Elfun Club has identified and recruited 20 young men and women from New Kalpakkam village to undergo training programme in Vocational Skills Education. The three-month training programme was successfully completed in Two Wheeler Mechanism, Four Wheeler Mechanism, A/C and Refrigeration Mechanism, Desk Top Publishing (DTP) & Computer Operations for the youth. The YES Tamil Nadu Network has arranged for internship training for the 20 youth in various private enterprises partners sites for on the job training and for absorption as employees in the private enterprises.

YES India Network Project for Tsunami-affected Youth-
YES India Network in collaboration with other like-minded groups has initiated its first project to bring back hope into the lives of those affected youth from the Tsunami-hit areas by providing training in various skill-based vocations.

YES India Network in association with Jayaprakash Narayan Community College and GE Elfun Club has identified and recruited 20 young men and women from New Kalpakkam village to undergo training programme in Vocational Skills Education. The project is organizing a three-month training programme in Two Wheeler Mechanism, Four Wheeler Mechanism, A/C and Refrigeration Mechanism, Desk Top Publishing (DTP) & Computer Operations for the youth. The training is organized with the aim of providing job oriented, work related, skill based education and providing support to the youth with job placements. It is projected that at the end of the training these youth would have been well equipped with the needed skills for getting employment in the local companies or private sectors.

Jaya Prakash Narayan Community College has come out with a specialized package just for the Tsunami youth who are looking at alternative livelihoods. Apart from the vocational skills training the students are being trained in Life Coping Skills, Communication and Inter-Personal Skills and General English.

GE Elfun Club, Chennai have identified and adopted the 20 youth from New Kalpakkam Village. They are sponsoring the training fees, training materials, and transportation of the 20 youth.

Official Launching of the YES India Vocational Training Programme for Tsunami Youth -
On 18th June 2005, the Vocational Training Programme for Tsunami Youth was officially launched at the Jayaprakash Narayan Community College, Chennai.

Mr. Chandrasekhar Natrajan, Chairman, GE Elfun Club officially inaugurated the Vocational Training Programme for the Tsunami Youth.
Mr. P. R. Muralidharan, Trustee, Jayaprakash Narayan Community College made a presentation on the Community College concept and its activities.

Mr. Praveen Kumar Prithvi, Country Coordinator, YES India Network spoke about the YES Campaign and its goals and how this project covered the campaign goals of Employability, Employment creation, Equity, and Empowerment for youth development.

Mr. Haribaskaran, Coordinator, YES Tamil Nadu Network, spoke about the Tsunami Relief Activities undertaken by the YES Tamil Nadu Network.

Ms. Kanchana Ravichandran, Deputy Coordinator, YES Tamil Nadu Network said that the Network is committed to providing job placement services to the 20 youth on their completion of the vocational training programme. She said that efforts have been taken for networking with various private players for providing jobs to these 20 youth.

All India Youth Employment Network Summit, 2005 And Launch of Selvi Dr. J Jayalalitha Youth Employment Program
Hosur, Krishangiri Dt. Tamilnadu-03nd April 2005-


The All India Youth Employment Network Summit 2005 was organized by the YES India Network, of the Youth Employment Summit Campaign, and Adhiyamaan College of Engineering and World Federation of Tamil Youth, USA on 03rd April 2005, at Hosur, India. The event, attended by over 600 participants representing youth, education and Training Institutions, YES Coordinators from all over India and NGOs, witnessed the Launch of Selvi Dr. J Jayalalitha Youth Employment Program in Krishnagiri District. The YES India Network is linked with the 69 YES Country Networks spread across six continents, launched by the YES Campaign at the historic Alexandria Youth Employment Summit 2002, by the Education Development Center, Inc, USA.

While delivering the presidential address, Prof. Dr. S.P. Thyagarajan, the Vice Chancellor-University of Madras, said that the literacy level in Tamil Nadu was raised from seventh position in the country to third position when Sevli Dr. J Jayalalithaa took over as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 2001 taking the first step towards employment promotion in the state.

Inaugurating the event, the Collector of Krishnagiri, Mr. Mangatram Sharma I.A.S, said that the solutions to the problem of unemployment must be homegrown and responsive to the social, cultural and economic context in our localities. “The Government will take necessary steps in creating employment opportunities under the guidance of the Chief Minister”, he added while reading a message from Honorable Chief Minister, Selvi Dr. J.Jayalalithaa.

While delivering the keynote address Mr. PK Joseph, the Regional Coordinator – Asia and the Pacific, stated, “traditional way of job created in the formal sector will have to give way to creating jobs in informal sector that involved youth at the helm of affairs, through entrepreneurship and youth leadership development. Youth, therefore, have to be the artisans of this change.” This is what the YES Campaign would do during the decade campaign of action launched in Alexandria Summit 2002.

Dr. Vijay G Bhaskar, President of World Federation of Tamil Youth, who launched the “Selvi Dr. J Jayalalitha Youth Employment Program” said that this initiative is a great move in the state to generate employment to several youth. He also announced the Selvi Dr. J Jayalalithaa International Essay writing competition in Tamil and English and the winner will be awarded Rs. One Lakh.

Briefing about the accomplishments of the YES India Network, Mr. Praveen Kumar, the YES India Country Coordinator highlighted the fast growth of the youth led YES Networks in 10 states of the country. YES India Network under the leadership of Mr. Praveen Kumar works with diverse stakeholders to develop programs and projects for youth employment in the country.

Mrs. Kamalamma, Chairperson, Karnataka State Women Development Corporation presented Selvi Dr J Jayalalitha Pride of India Awards 2005 to outstanding personalities in the areas Social Service, Education and governance.








The delegates adopted the YES Frame Work for Actions to create youth Employment under the banner of the 6-E’s

• Environmental Sustainability and
• Empowerment

Tamil Nadu YES Network in association with World Federation of Tamil Youth Inc. USA and Adiyamaan College of Engineering, Hosur would initiate a pilot project – need assessment survey to identify the areas of employment opportunities available in the district of Krishnagiri and identify emerging areas for new skills developments and entrepreneurship to eliminate the un-employment and under employment problem in the district.
