CAN2008 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Dear Colleagues, As you would know Ghana is scheduled to host the 26th edition of the African Nations Cup, in 2008. Building on work which began in 2005 and is still on going to highlight Sports for Development and Peace and bearing in mind the important role which volunteers played in the recent Football World Cup, the UNV unit is in discussions with the CAN2008 Local Coordinating Office to explore how the UN system might use the occasion to build consciousness around the MDGs and about volunteerism.

On the issue of volunteerism, YES Ghana has been asked to assist with the recruitment of volunteers to undertake various tasks in the period leading up to and during the games. If you are interested in assisting with CAN2008, please print and complete the application form and
return it by Friday, 15 June, 2007. The application can be downloaded from the "documents" section of this page, and should be delivered in hardcopy with 2 passport photos to the YES Ghana office located at No. C824/3 Mango Tree Avenue (between FedEx and CPP headquarters) Asylum

YES-GHANA ESTABLISHES CAREER RESOURCE CENTRE

A Career Resource Centre has been established by YES-Ghana Country Network, with $20,000 support from the UNDP during the last quarter of 2006 under the UNDP Annual Work Plan for Civil Society. This new Centre serves as a one-stop-shop for information and advisory services on career development for young people. Apart from providing one-on-one career guidance and counselling for young people, the Centre also provides access to online resources and reading materials relevant to youth development and career choices, including accessing start-up capital, nursing a business idea, business partnerships etc. The Centre also hosts an updated database of job vacancies, business opportunities and funding prospects.

In 2007, an additional $30,000 funding has been secured from the UNDP to upgrade the Centre to a state-of-the-art facility, with an expanded thematic scope beyond ‘careers’ to become Ghana’s first and only Development Resource Centre for youth.

With this upgrade, the Centre now stocks over one hundred titles of books and countless online resources on career development, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS), and other national and international development information.

The Development Resource Centre now has six high-capacity computers, fully networked and internet-enabled. Enhanced client services such as SMS-based job/business enquiries, and Toll-Free telephone counselling are scheduled to start by end of April 2007. Public awareness of the Centre’s services will be ensured through newspaper advertisements, Radio discussions and announcements, as well as printing and distribution of brochures.

The Centre’s services will be linked to the Community Information Centres (CIC) of the UNDP in the regions to enable wider access. The Centre will be backstopping training activities of other civil society projects. The Centre will also be linked to the new UNDP Civil Society Centre for online/internet presence and support. All the above-mentioned innovations will ensure sustainability and improved services.

There are other major activities planned for 2007 - Ghana’s Golden Jubilee year. Among others, YES-Ghana will be hosting a West African Regional Youth Consultation on the MDGs to coincide with the AU meeting in Accra in July; Quarterly Youth and Development Dialogue Series; and a STAND-UP Anti-Poverty Concert in October.

YES-Ghana is also at the fore-front of the process to help Ghana become an ILO/YEN Lead Country this year.

Special thanks to the Country Director of the UNDP, Mr. Daouda Taure, who also serves as the UN Resident Representative in Ghana. Together with his team of apt, youth-friendliness, they have supported YES-Ghana in many ways. Thanks also the to the team of hardworking young professionals of YES-Ghana who have worked tirelessly around the clock to drive the process; Emmanuel, Kwesi, Vinyo, Sharon and Adwoa. Above, special thanks to Poonam Ahluwalia, the dreamer who started it all.

Young people vow to take active part in national development and call for comprehensive National Youth Policy.

ACCRA, August 14, 2006. Young people celebrating the International Youth Day have reaffirmed their commitment to active participation in mainstream national development, and have called on Government and other stakeholders to join forces with youth to produce a comprehensive National Youth Policy as an imperative for youth development.

This was the outcome of a consultative meeting of the “Youth Voices Against Poverty” held in Accra on Saturday, 12 August, 2006 under the theme “Tackling Poverty Together; young people and the eradication of poverty”.

Participants unanimously committed to identifying specific entry points for their participation in decision-making for national development, and implementation of poverty reduction programmes under the Growth and Poverty Reduction Strategy, towards fulfilling national development agenda. Specifically, the “Youth Voices Against Poverty” is to embark on a nationwide “Youth and MDGs Project” aimed at empowering youth to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

While commending Government for taking steps to support youth employment through the National Youth Employment Programme, participants deplored the seemingly low level of interest in developing a comprehensive and workable policy framework for youth development in Ghana. The lack of such policy framework has led to the undertaking of scattered and immeasurable youth development programmes which have not yielded desired goals.

Young people in Ghana therefore call for the re-establishment of a national stakeholder consultative mechanism towards the development of a National Youth Policy. There is a role for everyone; Government, civil society, donors, private sector, and young people themselves.

“Youth Voices Against Poverty” represents young people and youth-serving organizations who form the National MDG Youth Platform. The Platform aims at mobilising and empowering young people from all over Ghana, to play a pivotal role in the national quest to reduce poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
