Background:
The Youth Employment Summit (YES) Ghana Country Network is a coalition of youths and youth-serving organisations nationwide, working in the area of youth empowerment. The Network is part of seventy (70) other YES networks around the world (see www.yesweb.org).
Launched in July 2002 and with a current membership of over 160 community-based development organisations and hundreds of individual members nationwide, the YES Network brings together innovative and energetic groups who work with relevant stakeholders to lay the foundation for the promotion of a sustainable and productive future for young people in Ghana
The mission of YES-Ghana is to support and promote policies and initiatives that help youth succeed in becoming life-long learners, productive members of society, materially sufficient, and self-respecting citizens. It aims to facilitate collaboration, coordination, information sharing and advocacy amongst governmental organisations, non-governmental entities, academic institutions, research bodies, civil society, and eminent individuals.
Objectives:
a. To develop and improve the capacity and effectiveness of youth-serving organisations to affect youth empowerment;
b. To raise awareness of issues that affect youth, such as using the YES framework of action, which includes the 7Es of Education, Employability, Employment Creation, Equity, Environmental Sustainability, Entrepreneurship, and Empowerment.
c. To improve the leadership and staff capacity of youth-serving organisations;
d. To influence and inform the development of public policy through research, information, advocacy and coalition building;
e. To develop innovative and effective youth empowerment initiatives.
Milestones:
As Ghana’s leading youth network that provides the needed capacities for youth and youth-serving organisations to develop workable programmes for youth development around the country, the Network’s collaboration with the British Council and other local donors in Ghana over the past three years has immensely contributed to programme success. Under this collaboration, the Network has successfully organised several national stakeholder consultations on the youth employment situation in Ghana, which have brought together relevant stakeholders to deliberate on the current scenario of pertinent youth concerns, and forging partnerships to address them.
Other programmes of the Network include (but not limited to)
i. Global Environment Facility (GEF) sponsored Renewable Energy Project
ii. “Capacity Building for Accessing Small Grants for youth-serving organisations in Ghana”
iii. “NEPAD Youth Participation Initiative”
iv. UNEP sponsored “African Environment Outlook for Youth Project”
v. “Young People Change the World” programme in collaboration with the Centre for Innovation in Voluntary Service, UK
YES-Ghana operates as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) officially incorporated according to the laws of Ghana at the Registrar General’s Department. The Network also has official consultative status with the National Youth Council of Ghana and enjoys a fruitful working relationship with the Ministry of Manpower, Youth and Employment; Ministry of Education and Sports; Department of Social Welfare; the Labour Office; the Trade Union Congress of Ghana etc.
Internationally, YES-Ghana enjoys strong affiliation with the Youth Employment Summit Campaign (www.yesweb.org); the United Nations Youth Programme (www.un.org/youth); Taking IT Global (www.takingitglobal.org); Global Youth Action Network (www.gyan.org); UNEP Youth Unit (www.unep.org); Youth Water Action Team (www.ywat.org) and; UN-Habitat Youth Strategy Team.
