Description:
UN-HABITAT hasl provided financial support to the Kenya Red Cross to mobilize and facilitate youth representatives to promote peace and reconciliation efforts in slum areas in Nairobi. This would entail the deliver emergency relief, while mobilizing our existing youth members as outreach workers to identify needy families and geographic areas that may be not is adequately served by current relief efforts. The youth would also be integral to mapping post-conflict shelter reconstruction needs within their communities, producing youth peace building media, help with post conflict shelter construction, and finally identify those who can receive job training and start micro-businesses.
Background:
Following the announcement of the results of the general elections held in Kenya, the country has witnessed sporadic violence that resulted in looting, destruction of property, loss of homes and lives. Environmental Youth Alliance and Stay Alive Youth Support Group have mobilized youth networks to to ascertain the situation on the ground. This is a composite picture from observers living in slum areas, as well as the Red Cross who is providing emergency aid in affected areas. The Red Cross has sent out two appeals for assistance to support on going post conflict relief efforts across Kenya.
The Kenyan Red Cross has also informed UN-HABITAT that it faces challenges distributing supplies to affected informal settlements, especially in areas where those in need of emergency assistance are difficult to reach. On the other hand, there has been a cry from the youth living in these areas to receive aid beyond relief camps. At the same time, Youth Groups working with UN-HABITAT at different capacities have informed the Agency of their willingness and capacity to provide the necessary assistance required to ease the current logistical challenge of aid reaching the interior areas of slums.
In addition, the Kenyan Red Cross has issued an appeal for 15.4 million to serve the projected needs for the over 500,000 people in need of humanitarian aid. In Nairobi, the response has been swift. The involvement of local radio stations has resulted in food and clothing being given at a faster rate than can be distributed. In this regard, the Kenya Red Cross has requested UN-HABITAT to provide support for the mobilization and facilitation of youth groups to help in facilitating peace efforts by supporting humanitarian relief efforts in informal settlements in Nairobi. In addition to this request was agreed that the technical experience and expertise of UN-HABITAT’s Water, Sanitation and Infrastructure Branch and the Agency’s Disaster Management Programme would be of value to the dire water and sanitation emergency situation being experience in many parts of the country.
