Description:
The German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) in conjunction with the youth group Windows for Young People in Africa (WYPA) and the non-governmental organisation (NGO) SODNET staged a number of intergenerational dialogues in Nairobi, Kenya, in April and May 2001, which aimed at facilitating communication across the generational gap between young and old people in select communities. The main dialogue, held at the professional centre on 19th and 20th May 2001, was a culmination of three preparatory dialogues held in Kasarani and Westlands area, in Langata and Starehe area, and Kamukunji and Makadara area. The idea for the intergenerational dialogues in Kenya arose at the Global Dialogue No. 10 at the EXPO 2000 in Hanover, Germany, in October 2000, which sought to develop new forms of participation to allow all groups to benefit from economic and political globalisation and technological advance. The German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) had asked young people from around the world to participate in this event. The young invitees from Kenya subsequently formed WYPA in order to advance the objectives of the Global Dialogue No. 10 at local or national level.
The intergenerational dialogues were based primarily on the assumption that lack of communication between the generations creates tensions and obstacles, which hinder community development per se and that of youth in particular. The Dialogues pursued some of the themes of the Global Dialogue No. 10, and also of the GTZ-supported International Youth Conference held in Nairobi in May 2000, namely Youth and Culture, Youth and Governance, Youth and Empowerment, and Youth and Poverty.
