Description:
The Vienna International Model United Nations 2004 (VIMUN2004) will take place from August 8 to August 12 2004 at the UN Office in Vienna.
Further, the VIMUN 2004 will mark the 10th anniversary of this annual event.
The main organizer of this event is the United Nations Youth and Student Association of Austria - Academic Forum for Foreign Affairs (UNYSA - AUSTRIA - AFA). Being honored and fortunate I was elected by the Board of UNYSA Austria to serve as the head of the organizing team - the Secretary General - for VIMUN 2004. Therefore, I would like to put all efforts in organizing this event and making it unique as well as innovative and special among all other Model UNs and VIMUNs.
A Model United Nations is a simulation conference of a real-life United Nations Conference. Students and young people between the age of 18 and 35 will get the chance to get familiar with negotiation processes as conducted in real UN agencies and bodies.
There are going to be different UN agencies/committees simulated such as the Security Council, the CHR (Commission on Human Rights), ILO, UNIDO, CCPCJ (Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice). Each committee is negotiating a specific topic. Participants will serve as delegates meaning that they will take the role of official representatives - diplomats, ambassadors etc. - of the country (which is not their home country) chosen.
The VIMUN 2004 will discuss topics that are imminent important in today's world ranging from food security and agricultural biodiversity to technology transfer, climate change issues, youth employment, child trafficking and truth commissions.
All the topics will be inter-linked as they are going to be discussed in the different committees making the VIMUN 2004 rather comprehensive in its approach towards complex problems in today's world.
Objectives:
The goal of VIMUN 2004 is first of all to raise awareness of the different negotiation mechanisms within the United Nations system.
Taking into account this fact the VIMUN 2004 should transport the spirit of the United Nations of peaceful settlement of conflicts and the improvement of lives of all peoples in the world.
As a result VIMUN 2004 will carry this spirit from the first day of the conference (8 August 2004) to its last day (12 August) in all aspects from the social program to the negotiations as conducted in the different committees.
