Description:
Working together with the NGO Learning and Development Kenya, the german-based organization - Live and Learn in Kenya - is building an entire Center in the heart of the Rhonda slums in Nakuru, Kenya. It is already called "The Miracle of the Rhonda Slums" by the residents.
Objectives:
Desolation, hunger and thirst, poverty beyond comprehension, illiteracy, AIDS - this is what rules the lives of the people - especially the children - living within the Rhonda Slums of Nakuru, Kenya. We are changing this - day for day - child for child.
Milestones:
In 2001 Live and Learn in Kenya (Leben und Lernen in Kenia e.V.) joined hands with the Kenyan NGO Learning and Development Kenya to change the lives of thousand of people. Together we built a huge solidly-built orphanage for the orphans - especially AIDS orphans. This two-story stone building is built to comfortably accomodate nearly 150 children. We were able to officially open the doors of the orphanage on January 4, 2004. To date, 103 orphans are living there.
The second construction phase - a 3-story stone building - consists of a large kitchen with storage rooms and a huge dining hall on the ground floor. The second floor holds the library and the second floor and the top floor will be a vocational training center for youths to learn an occupation such as sewing, carpentry or computer. These rooms are being used as a preschool - 4rd grade until the next building - a preschool/primary school (up to grade 8) with 3 special education classrooms, is completed. This will be our main project for 2007 in the hopes that we will be able to officially open it in 2009.
Budget:
The orphanage is finished except for electricity and water access. We will need about $8000 to have the Center hooked up to the municipal electricity facility. It would be much better to have solar energy. We are looking for sponsors or a sponsoring firm to help us with this project.
$3000 will more or less finish the present construction with kitchen/dining hall/common hall/library/vocational training center.
The school construction will cost about $180.000.
We are building solidly for generations!
We will need $10.000 to buy the neighboring plot of land to build the medical/dental hospital with AIDS clinic and the next vocational training center once the school is built.
