Description:
The Nairobi Believers Mission (NBM) is a young inter-denominational church ministry that was started in August 2003 with a group of believers as a house fellowship and is now grown to over 200 members and established in the slums of Kibera, Nairobi
Background:
Kibera is one of the largest slums of our world today. Kibera has a population of nearly one million people housed on a 600 acre piece of land. Though the living standard is very poor, most residents are full of smiles, love and are very social.
We are on the verge of experiencing revival and community transformation. Families are being strengthened even as broken marriages restored. It’s evident that God is turning the fathers’ hearts towards their children.
Objectives:
Our Vision: To influence family & community transformation in Jesus name. (Isaiah 11: 1-9)
Our Mission: Reach. Equip. Release. (Matthew 18 – 20)
Milestones:
Our Ministry
In the past Nairobi Believers Mission has been involved in: evangelism campaigns (ministering to over one hundred people weekly in schools and other institutions), drug reduction demand campaigns all over Nairobi, HIV/Aids awareness campaigns & training the community on care giving, sports evangelism, establishment of a Sudanese refugees mission, economic empowerment and Income generating activities.
Presently the NBM has a great team of leaders who are dedicated to serve God & people in this harsh Kibera environment. We work in partnership with other Christian churches & organizations in fulfilling our God given mandate to positively impact one million souls in this generation. Since having moved into our current site on 24th Dec 2006 we are already working the community through; evangelism, discipleship including leadership training.
Due to our aggression in outreach & evangelism, we had to expand our initial building in Jun –Jul 2007 for us to accommodate our ever growing congregation. The church now has room for over 200 worshipers and the building is already full.
We also partner with the community to offer education. The lack of proper education development and community training is now breeding a generation of children who have been left vulnerable to such threats like, lack of knowledge, exposure to diseases and violence committed against them.

Current Initiatives
Nairobi Believers Mission seeks to create a pathway leading from new converts/ believers into discipleship and ministry. This will help cater for the congregation’s spiritual development & growth.
All this we’re doing with the virtue of love as commanded with our Lord Jesus Christ:
• Evangelism - 40 days of outreach & evangelism: This campaign involves 3-4 days a month across the year. In 2007 the campaign has borne lots of fruits already. The church is adding at an average of 3 souls each week. It is our mandate to follow up these new converts to see that they attend discipleship classes in order to understand their purpose in Christ. This initiative costs A$100 each month.
• Women’s Ministry: Our women are passionate about Kingdom goals. The desire to see God’s Kingdom established in Kibera is driving them to establish influential fellowship groups. Pastor Gladys Otieno, (Ken’s wife) and Pamela Achieng are both leaders in this ministry. Income generating activities are also in the agenda of these womens’ fellowship groups. Savings are made each week to build a sizable nest for future projects for each woman, to help begin the journey out of poverty.
• Kid’s Outreach: This is the most vibrant part of our church. The programs are on the edge & are cross-cutting; spiritual, entertaining and educative at the same time. My wife Pastor Linda & Pastor Ken Otieno are both leaders (kids pastors) in this vital ministry.
• Home cells: This is our back-borne ministry. Our vision is to spread ourselves within 5 miniutes walk from every Kibera resident. Our present cell leaders are truly dedicated servant leaders.
• Emerging Leaders training: As we continue to experience revival, the need to emphasize on raising leaders for the harvest cannot be ignored. Every fortnight the key leaders in NBM have been meeting to strengthen their capabilities, know each other more deeply and study leadership principles vital in their ministerial positions.
• Sunday Celebration service: NBM’s celebration service attracts all kinds of worshippers and seekers. The Spirit –led services are dynamic & full of Gods’ power. The testimonies of what God is doing inn the community fills the service with praise.
• Kibera Community Empowerment Project (KCEP): This is an initiative for evangelising the community though community ministry. It ranges from empowering small businesses, training community leaders and creating awareness of health issues.
Part of KCEP is our micro-finance initiative. We are trying to strengthen small businesses in the community towards economic empowerment program. Currently with the current church offerings, NBM has strengthened a few small businesses within our community by offering small loans. This anointing eases poverty pressure from God’s people (Luke 4:18).
Needs:
Current Needs
We are seeking funds to continue the initiatives above and to be able to empower;
• Widows and young mothers into their own businesses
• Orphans to be educated in areas that result in real employment (i.e. Technical College).
• Develop a regular feeding program for Orphans & other vulnerable children in the community.
How you can help:
• Build a storage room: As we are situated in a crime area it is important to have a shed for storage (strong room). This would cost A$800.
• Sponsor an orphaned youth into technical college: We are trying to help orphans in to the community by getting them into a technical college (as in TAFE), a standard course runs for two to three years. This would cost A$400 per year.
• Micro-finance: Our weekly offerings average $15 - $20, which means that we can only empower four businesses each year. It is therefore our desire to partner with strategic people or organizations in order to help strengthen the already existing businesses and empower more residents. For A$4000 we can empower at least forty already existing business with a loan of $100 each refundable to the church within a period of 6 months. The money will again be used to help empower other businesses in the community.
• Provide for orphans: We are currently partnering with the Mama Wilfrida Children’s Home to feed, educate & house over fifty children who have been orphaned as a result of HIV/Aids deaths. For A$1500 per month we can feed 65 orphans.
• Purchase a van: To assist in transport for the missionary teams we host regularly. This would cost approx. $10,000.
• Running a pre-school: By partnering with a primary school that offers education to the Kibera boys and girls. We are looking for donations of educational materials and toys to assist in development. We are also looking for funds to establish a play area and provide snacks for the children.
• Contribute towards personal operation costs: Personally, you can help us (Linda and I) to be more effective in ministry by standing with us to cover our personal operation costs:
o Contribute to our house rent (total cost is A$280 month)
o Assist with transport (eg. a purchase of motor bike is A$1,900).
