Description:
The African-European Volunteer Network is an initiative of Volunteers within the International Association for Volunteer Efforts and Nigeria Network of NGOs, that will be developed in partnership with volunteers and volunteer involving organisations across Europe and Africa. The network will be managed by a steering committee made up of representatives from Volunteer involving organisations and respected individuals working in the voluntary sector.

Background:
Sustainable development requires people’s engagement, there is no question about that. People are development actors and not only receipients. In this regard the value of volunteering most especially in the south by people in their communities have only started to be more widely understood and recognised.

It is clearly evident that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) cannot be achieved if people do not involve themselves through voluntary action. The actual contribution of volunteers in economic terms, has been estimated at more than US$10 billion. In return for their time capacities are built hence becoming entry points for future development efforts.

Recognising the imporatnce of volunteering, Volunteers and Volunteer involving organisations in Nigeria in December 2004 celebrated the International Volunteer Day with series of activities. At the end of the events National IVD Committee members saw the need for a unified effort in the voluntary sector noting that this cannot be taken for granted as there is the urgent need for it to be recognised, networked and promoted.

Objectives:
 To work in line with the objectives of volunteering
 Peer learning to enable Africa and European volunteers learn from each other in a systematic way through the promotion of exchanges, dialogue and shared initiatives on volunteering.
 Acting as an information hub, connecting African volunteers with volunteerism and issues, facilitating dialogue between African and European Volunteer institutions.
 Acting as a departure point for research, promoting comparative studies on aspects of volunteering in Africa and Europe.

Milestones:
 An active network involving volunteers, volunteer involving organisations, CBOs, Clubs and Associations in 10 African and European countries in a range of peer learning and mutual volunteer support activities and to engage volunteers in a dynamic, fun-filled adventure that promotes cross-cultural, inter-racial and understanding of volunteerism.
 An interactive website and newsletter/e-newsletter which supports the work of other volunteer initiatives across Africa and Europe, which also showcases the activities of the Africa-European Volunteer Network.
 Engagement of over 20 African/European Volunteers to engage in service projects on the MDGs
 One themed meeting of members to consider mutual interests and to stimulate joint volunteer activities; and
 Provision of logistical and technical support to three new and emerging volunteer groups.

Needs:
 The main indicator of success will be an active membership of the African-European Volunteer Network with a target of 10 African/European Volunteers participating in volunteer activities aimed at achieving the MDGs.
